Sunday, January 3, 1999: Betsy is told to go to Paris where she will arrange the catering for a large party, as well as being part of the Agency's team there.

Monday, January 4: Alyssa, who is with Nicholai visiting Harley and Desiree in Miami, gets a call to report to New York for a briefing. Harley also receives a call, giving him a brief outline of the mission Alyssa will be on. It's to take place in Paris, and Hunt has reason to believe that sending recognizable agents could complicate things so Harley and Desiree are specifically being omitted, though they could be needed as backup at a later date. The foursome discuss the situation, and Nicholai decides to go to Germany to keep his ID there active. Harley and Desiree decide to go skiing in Switzerland. That way, anyone watching the three of them will see they're not in France, but if things go wrong, they can arrive in France quickly.

Tuesday, January 5: Alyssa, Biff, Chantelle, James, Amber, Vinnie, Zander and Raven attend the briefing in New York City. Sam explains that their targetsMark Doyle and Bonnie Kirstenare two freelance couriers. Their movements are extremely difficult to track because (A) they rarely make reservations in advance; (B) when they do make reservations, they often make multiple reservations; (C) they use credit cards issued through their company and in retrospect, it's apparent that they will often use a card that is issued to one of their employees. Hunt has gotten word that the duo will be transporting something that could be of interest to the American government but we don't know what it is or who they are transporting it from or to. Everyone is supposed to keep an extremely low profile on this mission because Hunt doesn't know if a "friendly" government is involved. The transaction might take place at a party, which he has arranged for Betsy to cater. After the briefing, Alyssa and Biff take a commercial flight to Paris. Chantelle and James board a military transport that will take them to Europe and from there, they will head to the American Embassy in Paris. Etienne had already been sent to Paris that morning, but he's supposed to stay in the background and simply assist Betsy, if needed, until told otherwise.

Frederique

Wednesday, January 6: Sam attempts to trace Mark Doyle and Bonnie Kirsten but can't come up with any useful leads. Vinnie and Zander take a commercial flight to Paris. On the plane, they run into Eric and Frederique in First Class. Vinnie talks to Eric and figures out he's a bit more than usual diplomatic attaché/government agent (she overhears someone who appears to be a bodyguard call him "Prince Eric.")  Raven takes a separate flight to Paris. Amber has difficulty getting the surveillance equipment through customs but eventually sweet talks her way through it, though not without attracting attention. After they land in Paris, Zander calls Sam and says they might have been spotted by Eric on the flight (he doesn't tell Sam Vinnie actually talked to him). Sam reports both incidents to Hunt and searches by both of them indicate that Doyle and Kirsten appear to have left their last location, but they lost them again. Hunt decides to change strategy since there's a chance that the transaction location might have changed. Agents are redirected to the following locations:
bulletJames is ordered to pull back to the U.S. naval base in Scotland.
bulletChantelle is to remain at the American embassy in Paris as a decoy and to make it appear that she's simply there on diplomatic duty.
bulletBetsy is to proceed with the party plans unless she hears otherwise.
bulletAlyssa is told to go to ground in Paris in case they need her but otherwise stay out of sight. If she needs anything, she is to contact Biff, who will be remaining active in Paris since he is not well known.
bulletEtienne is told to lay low until ordered otherwise.
bulletRaven is keep an eye on the Paris airport for Doyle and Kirsten
bulletMichaela is to do the same at Heathrow in London.
bulletAmber is sent to Madrid
bulletVinnie and Zander are sent to Berlin where they are given an address and told to break in, leave a few bugging devices and cameras but to set them up so that they are not connected or transmitting. Zander is given free reign to redecorate. Hunt explains to Sam that it's a diversion and mild prank directed at his counterpart in Germany. When they're not doing that, they're supposed to watch the Berlin airport.
bulletBruce is called up and sent to Dallas airport to watch for Doyle and Kirsten appearance there.
bulletDesiree is told to do the same at Miami airport.
bulletJuan is sent to JFK.
bulletHarley is sent to Newark
bulletNick is sent to O'Hare in Chicago
bulletChristy is sent to LAX (LA's airport)
bulletRejesh is sent to St. Louis airport (a major hub for two carriers)

Later that day, Doyle and Kirsten are spotted at Miami airport but no one can find any sign of a flight they took in or out of there. Someone suggests that they could be using a private plane, so Sam calls Nicholai to have him check into it. One of his contacts has, indeed, rented a Lear jet to the company, Expedio Inc. The destination logged with the FAA is the Cayman Islands but later the plane's tail numbers show up in Rio. Juan, Harley and Desiree are diverted to Rio.

Thursday, January 7: Juan arrives first and is convinced he saw the tail numbers on a plane being taken into a hanger, but all attempts to get closer to the plane or track down Doyle and Kirsten fail. It becomes obvious the plane is under heavy surveillance/protection, and it appears that it's being used to transport drugs. Hunt arranges for the plane to be tracked but when it lands, it's sporting a different tail number. A check reveals the genuine plane has signaled the airport in Rome to request landing clearance. in the meantime.

Sam calls D'Angelico, briefs him on the situation and asks him to dispatch people immediately to watch the airport and tail the people who leave the plane. Etienne is diverted to Rome. Hunt calls up Selina (Whitney), who is in Milan, and asks her to meet with D'Angelico in Rome. Selina arrives in Rome first, where D'Angelico meets her and drives them to the house Doyle and Kirsten surveillance followed them to. While waiting for more information on the location, Selina does a better job of surveillance so D'Angelico is sent to pick up Etienne at the airport. D'Angelico is impressed by Etienne's command of the Italian language and knowledge cultural knowledge. Upon meeting Selina, Etienne pulls out all the stops in complimenting her, which she graciously accepts while pointing out they need to focus on the mission.

*They enter the house and do a room to room search.
*The Bad guys end up in the basement
*The Bad guys have 2 suitcase nuclear devices disguised as briefcases.
*While searching the upstairs, Etienne picks up a gun.
*Selina convinces Etienne not to keep the gun, that he has more powerful weapons than firearms.
*The Bad guys find out they are in the house and try to escape each carrying one of the suitcases.
*Kirsten is caught without too much fuss.
*Doyle activates the suitcase bomb, but Etienne convinces him to disarm it and surrender.
*Selina reminds Etienne about more powerful weapons.
*Questioning of the duo begins.
*Doyle and Kirsten are uncooperative, Doyle is almost abusive.
*Doyle tells the good guys that they do not know who he and she is.
*A phone call is made to HQ and Mueller orders them to release the couple.

The Party was a diplomatic party to work out a trade agreement between certain countries.  The duo was hired to pick up the bombs, and deliver them to operatives in Paris who would have brought them to a diplomatic affair and proceeded to eliminate and disrupt the stuff happening there.

Friday, January 8: Mission over. Selina invites Etienne to dinner. During dinner, he asks if she's married, which she says she's not. Then he asks if she's involved with anyone, and she admits that there are a few people she sees regularly, and he says he does the same. One thing leads to another, and Etienne asks Selina when she'll be needed elsewhere.

Selina: Either when I get a phone call or February, whichever comes first.

Etienne: I don't have to return to New York until the 20th. What if you show me Germany, and I show you Rome?

Selina agrees, and it's the start of an interesting trip.

Saturday, January 9: Etienne carefully references to Whitney Blaze, alluding to the fact that she and Selina are the same person. Selina gives no indication that he is correct, which makes him wonder about his suspicions, but he doesn't give up the idea because his instinct is usually correct.

Sunday, January 10: While talking about jazz, Etienne realizes that Selina reminds him of a singer named Jenna Davis who occasionally performs in NYC. When he mentions Davis and praises the singer, Selina admits to knowing of the singer, but the small smile she purposefully gives him confirms what he suspects without saying it deliberately.

Tuesday, January 12: Selina and Etienne decide to go to Paris before heading to Rome.

Wednesday, January 13: While discussing their dislike of Richard Cahill, Selina comments that Cahill made the mistake of interfering with the one condition she gave him for her services and that had he continued to interfere, he would have regretted it. When Etienne asks what Cahill did, Selina asks him if he's learned the folly of living under the same name he works under. Etienne admits that it's inconvenient at times, and she simply says that if he ever has the opportunity to do things over again, he should set up one name that stays clean. She won't say anything else on the topic, but Etienne asks if that's the case, why did she meet Jon under that name? When she admits to being confused as to which "John" he's talking about, because it is a common name, Etienne explains that he means Jon Von Rothschild, but Selina appears simply confused and clueless as to what he's talking about. She is very convincing, so Etienne drops it, but his instinct still insists she is Whitney Blaze.

Thursday, January 14: Having gradually figured out how broad Selina's knowledge base is, Etienne suggests that they pretend to be tourists. On and off through the rest of their journey, they introduce themselves under various names from various countries. No matter what profession Etienne claims for Selina, she manages to be totally convincing to whomever they meet. Etienne is almost, but not quite, as successful when she turns the tables on him, but then he simply shifts the conversation to focus on whomever they are talking to.

Friday, January 15: Selina and Etienne have dinner with Etienne's mother, stepfather, sister and brother-in-law, who are suitably charmed by her.

Monday, January 18: Etienne and Selina arrive in Rome.

Tuesday, January 19: During a particularly good day, Etienne asks if anything could have made things more perfect and Selina not only thought of Damien, but Etienne noticed the brief look on her face.

Etienne: You did just think of something. What was it?

Selina: Nothing.

Etienne: If it wasn't something, perhaps it was someone?

Selina: Perhaps.

At that, Etienne starts asking questions without pushing too hard and advises Selina that if she's found the perfect person for her, she should not let him go. Selina finds Etienne's matchmaking amusing, but he explains that he likes to see people happy and if she's happiest with another man, how could he begrudge her that?

Wednesday, January 20: Etienne returns to New York, but tells Selina to stay in touch because he's curious as to how things work out for her ... and he'd just like to see her again, regardless of the circumstances. After he leaves, Selina carefully analyzes her feelings for Damien, admits to herself that they are much deeper than she realized and, after contemplating the possible future scenarios and their outcomes, decides that the only solution is to break things off with him because (A) he could be used against her; (B) she doesn't want him to be harmed, which is quite possible if anyone ever connects one of her aliases to Whitney Blaze. Telling him about her other life is not an option since it only increases the danger for both of them.

Thursday, January 21: Selina goes back to Germany, switches identities to become Tori Lenox and spends the next few days performing in clubs at night, driving fast on the Autobahn during the day and calculating the best way to break things off with Damien. She rejects the idea that she simply dump him because she can't come up with a reason she's sure he'd believe (while she is supremely confident that she's an excellent actress, he's the one person who knows the most about the "real" her, so she's not sure her performance would be convincing). She considers faking the death of Whitney Blaze to be a last resort because she's not quite ready to give up that identity yet, and she'd have to give up certain music IDs as well since he knows of them, at least unofficially. She finally decides to force him to break up with her by sleeping around the way she did before, but in such a way as to guarantee that the stories will get back to him (by being seen by gossipmongers in their social circle as well as women who have an ax to grind against her).

Whitney in the Caribbean

Sunday, January 24: Whitney drives to Zurich, where she packs for the fashion shows the next few weeks. She carefully avoids Damien during her brief visit home.

Tuesday, January 26: Whitney flies to Martinique. She begins to implement her plan and is careful to avoid getting into the tabloids but otherwise goes out of her way to be seen with a variety of eligible and handsome men.

Saturday, January 30: Whitney goes to Bonaire.

Wednesday, February 3: Whitney arrives in New York City to prep for the spring fashion shows.

Monday, February 8: Fashion "week," which is really two weeks, begins.

Saturday, February 13: Etienne appears at show Whitney is modeling at and arranges to be "introduced" to her. Despite his intimations that they know each other, Whitney appears totally clueless as to what he's referring to. When he asks her out to dinner, she declines because she has other plans.

Trent & Whitney

Monday, February 15: Etienne returns with a date to the Betsey Johnson show Whitney is modeling at and strikes up a conversation with Trent, Whitney's latest companion. By the time the conversation is over, Etienne has convinced Trent that he and Whitney should joining Etienne and his date for dinner at Pearl's, a restaurant so exclusive, it only has one or two tables (depending upon the size of the party; the remaining patrons are seated at the bar). Whitney still doesn't slip and Etienne seriously begins to wonder about his theory after noticing that not only is Whitney left handed whereas Selina was right handed, but that they even eat differently (Selina eats British style, whereas Whitney eats American style). His confidence in his instinct, however, refuses to let him give up the idea, so when they say good-night, Etienne kisses Whitney's hand and whispers to her "We'll always have Paris." Whitney remains poker faced but is convinced he knows for sure (he doesn't). She decides to wait for an opportunity to shake his confidence in his theory.

Sunday, February 21: With the NY shows over, Whitney heads to the Cayman Islands for a few days before the Milan fashion shows begin. While there, she continues her plan to force Damien into breaking up with her and discreetly checks on her bank accounts there.

Saturday, February 27: Whitney arrives in Milan for the start of the Italian runway shows. At night, she continues her "la dolce vida" plan.

Whitney & Paulo shortly before the shooting

Monday, March 1: Whitney only has one fashion show and is finished modeling by 2 p.m., so she returns to the hotel to have a late lunch with Paulo, her current lover. However, he needs to make a few business phone calls before lunch, so she decides not to wait for him. Instead, she takes her time walking to the restaurant and visiting a few shops along the way. Within 10-15 minutes of leaving the hotel, she bumps into Damien, who seems a bit flushed but otherwise normal. He doesn't seem entirely surprised to see her, but he neither references to her activities or her absence. Finally, Whitney asks what he's doing in Milan.

Damien: Someone tried to move in on an acquisition I've been working on, and I had to kill the deal.

Shortly thereafter, Damien excuses himself and leaves. Whitney proceeds to restaurant, but when Paulo is still missing more than 30 minutes later, she calls the hotel and is told that he had been shot shortly after she left. Whitney returns to the hotel to answer questions for the police and learns that Paulo was killed by a sniper with a perfect shot to the head from across the street. While the police have deduced the location of the sniper at the time of the murder, no evidence was left behind. Whitney puts up a good front of being upset while "putting on a brave face" to fulfill her modeling commitments. In reality, she's trying to figure out if the shooting was due to business of Paulo's or hers. She also keeps thinking of Damien's appearance and comments, though she can't quite believe he's involved.

Tuesday, March 2: Etienne becomes nervous when he learns that a lover of model Whitney Blaze was murdered.

Wednesday, March 3: Using the name Joanna Smalls, Whitney hires a private investigator to look into Paulo's background. She's trying to find any evidence that would indicate his shooting was purely the result of his own actions.

Thursday, March 4: Whitney flies to Geneva very briefly to drop off and pick up various things and then flies to Paris to prep for the spring fashion shows. While in Geneva, she not only doesn't call Damien but is careful to avoid him during her brief stopover.

Friday, March 5: As Selina, Whitney calls George, as well as a few other people in similar positions, and inquires about the person who shot Paulo. She claims to need backup for an upcoming assignment and that sniper's M.O. fits perfectly, so she would like to make him an offer. They agree to look into it.

Sunday, March 7: After a few days of behaving rather quietly, Whitney allows herself to be "convinced" to go out and try to take her mind off Paulo's murder. She's a bit more quiet than before, due to possible tabloid interest after the shooting, but otherwise continues her plan. Essentially, she avoids Prince Albert, actors or anyone going through a high-profile divorce, but most other men are fair game.

Monday, March 8: Fashion "week," which runs through March 20, begins in Paris. Whitney is careful about who she sees, but gradually relaxes, though she still can't shake the suspicion that Damien was involved in the shooting somehow.

Tuesday, March 16: The private investigators can find nothing conclusive for "Joanna." Yes, Paulo had a few shady things in his past, any of which could have provoked someone to murder, but none of them were so bad or so recent as to indicate they were the likely motive.

Wednesday, March 17: Whitney reconnects with Jackson, one of her former lovers.

Monday, March 22: Whitney and Jackson go to Barcelona.

Thursday, March 25: While taking a bath, Whitney heard a combination crash and thud from the terrace. Wrapping a towel around herself, she investigates and finds Jackson dead on the terrace from a gun shot (as he knocked over a table as he fell, which explained the thud and crash). She steps back inside and starts screaming, pretending to be hysterical. Help arrives quickly and a "shocked, panic-stricken"  Whitney deals with the authorities. She puts on an Oscar-caliber performance and thoroughly convinces the police that she knows nothing about this, though it eventually "occurs" to her that her stalker might be involved. The physical evidence makes it plain that Jackson was shot from the roof of a building across the plaza from their hotel.

Friday, March 26: After answering more questions for the police, Whitney is finally alone by late afternoon and resumes analyzing the situation. Due to her previous relationship with him, Whitney knew quite a bit about Jackson and unless something changed, it was very unlikely that he did anything to warrant murder. She also can't get the meeting with Damien in Milan out of her mind.

Etienne, who was just beginning to relax again, learns of the second shooting in regard to Whitney. He arranges to take two weeks off and calls Raven to see if she would like a visitor. Needless to say, she would. Etienne plans to stay with her for a week and spend the rest of his time traveling discreetly and visiting other paramours.

Saturday, March 27: Whitney arranges for a new credit card and has it sent to her at the Regency Beverly Hills Hotel. She also makes reservations at that hotel, starting March 30.

Etienne arrives in Providence, R.I., and finally sees the condo Raven bought in a restored Victorian mansion, including the bed she had made (it’s suspended from the ceiling by chains a la the film Caprice). Once there, even he's surprised at how quickly he begins to relax. At first, he assumes it's due to relief of being somewhere Whitney's sniper is unlikely to find him. Later, he realizes that it has more to do with the atmosphere and Raven's subtle pampering.

Tuesday, March 30: Whitney flies to Los Angeles and discreetly tries to find an out-of-work actress who is left handed and looks quite a bit like her.

Wednesday, March 31: While relaxing, Etienne lets slip to Raven that he left New York City in part because he’s concerned about the shootings surrounding model Whitney Blaze. While not consciously or purposefully pumping him for information, Raven, rather confused by his explanation, asks various questions that leads Etienne to disclose his suspicions that Whitney Blaze and freelancer Selina Kyle are the same person. While Raven follows his logic, some of his other comments about the shootings and Selina’s comment in Rome don’t quite make sense, so she continues to ask questions which spark a few ideas in Etienne’s mind. He makes a few phone calls to society columnists he knows and discovers that Whitney has been in a relationship with antique dealer Damien Bonaire. A few other phone calls confirm that Damien hasn’t been in his usual haunts during period of the shootings. Etienne concludes that Damien is the shooter, and obviously a skilled assassin. This makes Etienne even more uncomfortable than he originally was concerning the matter. Raven files the information away mentally but says nothing to Etienne.

Thursday, April 1: Despite enjoying himself, Etienne decides to leave earlier than he originally planned because he’s concerned that he’s becoming too dependent on Raven. He’s also worried because he told her about Whitney despite promising himself that he would not speak of it – at least until it’s necessary. More surprising is the fact that it happened even though she wasn’t manipulating or pumping him for information (he would have recognized that).

Friday, April 2: Whitney finds a girl named Kelly who fits the criteria and offers her a deal: pretend to be Whitney Blaze for up to two weeks, maybe more, and Whitney will pay her $5,000 up front and $5,000 at the end of the period. Whitney explains that she'll teach Kelly how to make herself up so that she looks even more like Whitney and all she has to do is keep busy in LA pretending to be Whitney. She claims to want some private time to grieve and rest but that if she disappears, the paparazzi will be looking for her. She had a woman who used to do this for her before, but the girl is seven months pregnant, so she's not an option. Kelly agrees. Then Whitney says she'll do what she can to help the girl's career if she keeps her mouth shut about this but if she ever tells anyone, Whitney will crush her career. Whitney hands her the new credit card, tells her to sign it and explains it has a $20,000 limit but to not go through it too fast because it might have to last more than two weeks. At that, Kelly gets nervous that she might be set up and asks Whitney to sign a paper stating what they just discussed. The paper will stay at Kelly's lawyer's office for the duration of the impersonation. After that, Kelly will keep it herself until the statute of limitations for fraud passes. Whitney agrees and tries to assure Kelly that this will be simple. Avoid anyone in the jet set and just have fun. Whitney begins coaching Kelly on her mannerisms and habits.

Saturday, April 3: With the paperwork settled, Whitney makes up Kelly and continues coaching her.

Sunday, April 4: The real Whitney quietly leaves the Regency that evening, with Kelly staying in her place and starting to socialize that night. During her time in Los Angeles, Whitney let it be known she was there but avoided socializing.

Monday, April 5: Whitney flies to Lyon, France, switches identities to Susan Sinclair and drives to Geneva, Switzerland, where she begins staking out Damien's home and shop.

Wednesday, April 7: Since she can't find any evidence that Damien's in Geneva, she places a few phone calls, carefully trying to ascertain if he's in Zurich.

Thursday, April 8: Whitney takes a shuttle flight to Zurich and begins staking out his home and shop there. By the end of the day, she's convinced he isn't there either so, knowing that his Zurich residence is the larger of the two homes, decides to break in that night and search it. She knows he has a security system, but when she begins trying to break-in, she notices for the first time how sophisticated it really is. At that, she examines the house and its systems more closely and realizes that while she can get into the house, it won't be easy, and he has a thorough monitoring system that will show that she has broken in. Further, until she gets in, there's no way to tell what sort of recording procedure he's using, and the method could make doctoring the tapes more difficult.

Whitney returns to her car to decide whether to break in or wait until he returns and break in, search and wait for him. Shortly after she gets to her car, her U.S. attorney calls telling her that she's wanted for questioning. Kelly evidently did too good a job of impersonating her because the sniper killed her boyfriend. Kelly immediately confessed to being an impersonator, so now the police want to talk to Whitney about why she hired someone to be her. Whitney tells her attorney to stall the police by telling them she will come to the U.S. to answer their questions, but that she hired Kelly so she could recover in peace from the shock of the previous death and this latest death has totally unnerved her. She also reminded him that she has a stalker, who is probably to blame. He promises to buy her as much time as possible and chides her for not arranging the imposter through his office.

Whitney returns home and spends the rest of the night trying to reach Kelly, but it becomes obvious that the police, or someone, are trying to intercept the calls. Eventually, Kelly calls her, but Whitney can tell from background noises that she's not alone. Whitney, sounding shaken, apologies profusely, insisting that she had no idea her stalker was behind Paulo's death or else she would have never hired Kelly. Whitney insists that the information she received from a private investigator indicated that Paulo's death was tied to his own life and that since she hasn't heard anything from her stalker in some time, she never considered the possibility. Kelly sounds like someone is prompting her to ask certain questions, but Whitney sticks to her story convincingly. However, she hears from her attorney again that the D.A.'s office in Los Angeles want her to testify before a grand jury. While her story seems legitimate, they are suspicious as to why she paid the girl the equivalent of $30,000, to which Whitney replies (sounding like a vapid model), "Why not? It's only money." By the time she gets this worked out, however, and gets further news on the case from California, it's nearly 5 a.m., which she considers a bad time to break in due to early risers, newspaper delivery, etc., so she returns to her house to get some sleep.

Friday, April 9: Around 11 a.m., Whitney goes to Damien's house and is surprised to find evidence that he's back. He leaves about 20 minutes later, and she follows him to his store. Deciding to search his house before he returns that night, she goes back home, reverts to her normal appearance and sleeps until 2:30 p.m. At first, she plans on going in as if things are normal, figuring that his monitoring system is probably only activated when he travels, since she doesn't remember encountering it before. However, seeing his car in the garage changes her plan. Carefully going around the perimeter of the house, she spots him in the study with a drink facing the foyer. This strikes her as odd, because he doesn't drink much and to be drinking alone during the day is definitely out of character.

Wanting to maintain the element of surprise, she quietly enters through the back and decides to take the servant's stairs to his bedroom to wait there, but before she fully reaches the second floor, she spots him at the top of the main stairs, still with a drink in his hand, facing the end of the hall/bedroom area as if he's waiting for something. Unbeknownst to her, Damien has been using a small wireless monitor to watch as she moves between camera ranges. Whitney creeps back downstairs, but despite not hearing him move, can't shake the feeling that she's being watched. Remembering the monitoring system, she decides to give up on surprising him and goes to the study to wait. She doesn't remove her jacket (because she's wearing both a gun in a shoulder holster and a small leather case carrying various chemicals) but sits facing door, waiting. After 20 minutes, she hears noises coming from the kitchen and eventually Basil walks by the study and then doubles back when he spots her. Both are surprised, though only Basil shows it. Damien joins them a moment later, suggesting that they eat, but Whitney coldly suggests that they leave Basil out of this. Damien insists he should stay, but when Whitney reasserts to Basil that it would be best for him to leave, he decides to comply.

Damien offered Whitney a drink.

Whitney: Later. Whom do you work for?

Damien: Myself.

Whitney: I do not think so.

The conversation that followed lasted more than two hours and could be likened to a verbal saber dance by two masters. Damien answered her questions while attempting to maneuver her into admitting that she loved him. Whitney parried his moves while challenging his answers from every angle. Whitney also uses against him the fact that his efforts to "send her a message" put her under police scrutiny, but Damien insists he's taken care of things, though he won't say how.

Whitney: You expect me to believe that the only two assassins just happened to set up lives in the jet set and end up lovers?

Damien: Who said we're the only two?

Whitney: Do you know of others?

Damien (Gallic shrug): Non.

Whitney: Then stop evading the question. Two supremely careful people in our line of work accidentally find each and become lovers?

Damien: It wasn't an accident.

Whitney: Then you admit you were working for someone?

Damien: I was working for no one. It was no accident because we are two of a kind. We were drawn together. You sensed a darkness in me that matched your own and it fascinated you. Your mind didn't realize it, but your instinct — and your heart — could feel it. Tell me: Does anyone alive know you as well as I do? Know how to make you laugh? Understands your moods? Match your passion? Be completely familiar while keeping you guessing? We are the same.

Whitney (pause): I would like that drink now. Cognac if you please.

While Damien is out of the room getting it, Whitney removes her jacket and shoulder holster, placing both, with the latter on top, on a chair before lounging on the couch with her legs up. Damien returns with her drink and noticing the change, excuses himself briefly. When he returns they continue they conversation, albeit with less confrontation. Partway through, he gets a phone call and after he hangs up, tells her that the police will now be satisfied that she's innocent.

Whitney: Why?

Damien: They found your stalker.

Whitney: My stalker is a lie.

Damien: Not any more — and he's dead. He overdosed, in part, to numb the pain of not being able to have you, or so the police will conclude. They'll find the rifle from the murders with him and a wall full of your clippings, and the case will be closed.

Whitney is suitably impressed and flattered. Then she asks why he waited until Barcelona to kill Jackson, and Damien explains that as a precaution, he avoids France entirely, so he couldn't track her there (and also explaining his previous business trips when she did the Paris shows). They continue to discuss exactly how they maneuvered around each other and where to go from here.

Whitney: So in other words, we proceed the same as before but with more information?

Damien: No, with more intimacy.

Whitney (pause): Then in that case...I'm hungry.

Damien: Basil brought—

Whitney (with a smoldering look): I wasn't talking about food.

They head upstairs to his bedroom and for the first time Whitney sees the bookcase moved aside to reveal the monitors that provide surveillance for the entire house inside and out. She also notices the gun and shoulder holster he left at the bar.

Whitney: You were wearing a gun under your sweater?

Damien: Just as you were, mon amour. I told you we were the same. [kiss]

They spend the next two weeks alone at Damien's home, readjusting to the changes in their relationship, catching up, making love, etc. Damien answers any question about his past, how he reinvented himself, how he met Basil and more, but does not press Whitney with questions in return. Instead, he patiently waits for her to bring up the topic, but she barely does. Other than a few snatches of information, she says nothing of her original life, though they do discuss methods and former cases somewhat. Damien also explains Basil's past as a smuggler and how much Basil knows about the two of them, which is everything. After adjusting to everything else, she was willing to accept Basil being their confidante. In fact, the only person they saw during this period was Basil when he arrived to bring them requested items.

Basil (grumbling on the fourth trip): What am I? A bloody errand boy?

Damien (grinning): But mon ami, I thought procuring and transporting items was your specialty? Besides, it's all in the name of l'amour. What could be more noble than that? You have been nagging me like a shrew to confess to her. Now you would begrudge me the rewards of my struggle?

Basil (mumbling under his breath): Bloody French, twisting every word...
